How to find the Practice's Customer Reference Number
The customer reference number is a number Centaur uses to identify each practice. It is used to check current support contract, contact details, what modules and features are installed and previous contact between Centaur and the Practice.
When contacting Centaur, provide this number to streamline the process.
- Within Dental4Windows/PracticeStudio, go to the Help menu
- Click About

- In the About window, see the Customer Reference #

- If this field is blank, check General Settings
- Go Location Setup > General tab
- Group: Other
- Enter the Customer Reference Number into the Customer Reference # field

How to Start and Stop the Dental4Windows / Practice Studio Database Manually
The Dental4Windows/PracticeStudio database runs on the Server computer through a service that is either
Dedicated Server: Scheduled to start and shutdown automatically each day
Non-Dedicated Server: Starts/Ends upon manual opening and closing of the application on the Server
Below are other ways the database can be started and stopped manually.
BE AWARE stopping the database will result in all client computers with Dental4Windows/PracticeStudio running losing connection to the database and the application will close itself.Dedicated Server
- With a Dedicated Server install a lightning bolt icon should be on the desktop which that allows the start or shutdown the database.
- Double click on this icon and, depending on what build of Dental4Windows / PracticeStudio, either a
- Grey window with options to Start or Stop
- Black window instructing to enter 1 to Start, or 2 to Stop

- Wait a few moments for a message confirming the database has successfully started or stopped.
Non-dedicated server
- As mentioned in the introduction, a non-dedicated Dental4Windows/PracticeStudio database is always started by launching Dental4Windows/PracticeStudio from it's icon

- To shut it down, simply close the Dental4Windows/PracticeStudio application. It may take a few minutes for the database to shutdown.
- To shutdown the database quickly, close the Dental4Windows/PracticeStudio application and right click on the lightning bolt icon in the task box found in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
- Click Shut down

How to Validate the Dental4Windows Database
Centaur has provided an easy to run Database Validation tool for all Dental4windows customers that is located on the desktop of the Server computer. It is recommended this is run once a week to maintain the integrity of the database.
- Go to the Server computer Desktop
- Stop the Database services from running, see above for instructions
- Find the desktop icon named D4w DB Validation
- Right click the D4w DB Validation icon > click Run as administrator
- Click Validate button, note the tool may become unresponsive during the process, however will resolve itself when the validation is complete
- Once completed click Finish
How to Install a Dental4Windows / Practice Studio Client (Setup Factory)
A Dental4Windows / Practice Studio client install allows the user to access the application by connecting to the database located on the server computer. For a Setup Factory install please follow the steps below.
Note: The below steps are only possible if D4W/PSS has previously been upgraded. If no upgrades have been run in the past, please Support.
- Open File Explorer
- Go to \\%servername%\CSAdmin\D4w_Storage\CIK (install files)
- Run the setup.exe
- Click Next
- License Agreement Window: Click I agree to the terms of this license agreement > Click Next
- Installation Method Window: Click Complete > Click Next
- Installation Folder Window: Click Next
- Application Mode Window: Click Client user > Click Next
- User ID Window: Select whichever User ID matches the role of this computer best > Click Next
- Location Window: Select the Country the practice is based in > Click Next
- Ready to Install Window: Click Install
- Click OK if the below message(s) appear to continue with the install
- Fail to install file. (#2, Line 226)
- Could not create directory. (#1, Line 277)
- Installation Completed Window: Tick the options applicable to this set up > Click Finish

At this time, we advise you to hold off on upgrading your practice computers that run Centaur products (Dental4Windows, Practice Studio, MediaSuite Digital Imaging and xPlain Patient Education) until we have tested our products with Windows 11.
